Tally Sheet Instructions

General Information

  • Payroll is figured at the end of each month and paid on the 15th of the next month.  The business manager must have the completed payroll verified by the adviser and turned in by the third of the next month to ensure payment on the 15th.
  • Section and photography editors must turn in tally sheets for each issue that was produced that month.  Tally sheets should be completed and turned into the business manager’s basket on the last production night of the month.
  • Missing this deadline will not only prevent writers and photographers from being paid, but will also prevent you from earning your salary.

Filling Out Tally Sheets

Section Editors

  • For each article in your section written by a non-work study student, record the name of the writer on the tally sheet.  Please print clearly and spell their name correctly because if it is incorrect the payroll office will send it back and the person will not be paid until the following month. Record a brief identifier as to what the article was about.  Measure and record the length of the article, rounding to the nearest quarter of an inch. Multiply the length by the rate ($.75/inch) and write the total pay in the last column.  Do this for each article in your section.
  • For work-study writers, tell your writers to keep a record of the time spent on their articles throughout the month.  Remind your writers to come to the office on the final production night of the month to fill out their timecard.  You do not need to tally up their inches as they will be paid through work-study.

Photography Editor

  • For each photograph in each issue, record the name of the photographer on the tally sheet.  Please print clearly and spell their name correctly because if it is incorrect, the payroll office will send it back and the photographer will not be paid until the following month. Record a brief identifier as to what the photo was about.  Record the number of photos for each person and multiply the number of photos by the rate ($10/photo) and write the total in the last column.
  • Remind work-study photographers to keep a log of the amount of time they spend taking photographs throughout the month.  On the final production night of the month, work-study photographers should come down to the Weekly office to fill out their timecards.
