Section Editors (salaried positions)

  • News Editor
    • Responsible for the news section of the paper.
    • Generates new story ideas and checks with sources on a regular basis.
    • Assigns stories to reporters.
    • Ensures that reporters meet deadlines, checking in throughout the week.
    • Makes photography requests to the photo editor.
    • On a monthly basis, tallies column inches written by each reporter in the news section and gives the list to the business manager.
    • Recruits section writers.
    • Responsible for design and layout of the section. Extra work required for the front page.
    • Reads and edits all stories, consulting with writers regarding any questions or changes.
    • Provides reporters with positive and negative feedback to encourage quality writing.
    • Responsible for rewriting sections of articles, as needed.
    • Responsible for knowing, following and communicating the newspaper’s editorial policy.
    • Attends all staff meetings.
  • Sports Editor
    • Responsible for the sports section of the paper.
    • Generates sports story ideas and compiles sports statistics.
    • Assigns stories to reporters.
    • Ensures that reporters meet deadlines, checking in throughout the week.
    • Makes photography requests to the photo editor.

    • Determines which letters to the editor to publish.
    • On a monthly basis, tallies the column inches written by each reporter in the sports section and gives the list to the business manager.
    • Recruits columnists and cartoonists.
    • Responsible for design and layout of the section.
    • Reads and edits all columns, consulting with writers regarding any questions or changes.
    • Provides columnists and cartoonists with positive and negative feedback to encourage quality writing.
    • Works with editor-in-chief to develop a weekly editorial.
    • Responsible for knowing, following and communicating the newspaper’s editorial policy.
    • Attends all staff meetings.
  • Photography Editor
    • Works with section editors and writers to brainstorm possible photo ideas to accompany articles
    • Prepares photos for print (crop, color, grayscale, brightness and contrast, etc).
    • Cooperates with section editors to determine which photos will be printed each week.
    • Ensures that the names, titles or year/majors of each person shown in the photo accompany the photograph.
    • On a monthly basis, tallies the number of photographs published in the paper by student photographers (non-work study) and gives the list to the business manager.
    • Attends all staff meetings.
  • Calendar Editor
    • Responsible for calendar section.
    • Compiles a weekly list of calendar events with accompanying jokes.
    • Meets deadlines.
  • Web Editor
    • Responsible for web edition of newspaper.
    • Maintains Gustavian Weekly website.
    • Adds new articles and photos on a weekly basis.
    • Attends all staff meetings.
  • Lead Copy Editor
    • Determines editorial policy
    • Writes and distributes Gustavian Weekly Style Guide
    • Trains and leads the other Copy Editors
  • Copy Editors
    • Ensures articles conform to The Gustavian Weekly Style Guide and AP style
    • Provides feedback to section editors

Other paid positions (work study or stipend)

  • Reporters
    • Come up with story ideas.
    • Keep in contact with sources.
    • Conduct interviews in a professional manner.
    • Write stories assigned by section editor(s).
    • Proofread own stories.
    • Make sure articles are well-researched and quotes are accurate.
    • Brainstorm headlines.
    • Meet weekly deadlines – handing stories in via email.
    • Meet with section editors on a regular basis.
    • Contact section editors with any problems, concerns, or questions.
    • Attend all required meetings.
  • Columnists
    • Pitch article ideas to commentary editor.
    • Write columns on a regular basis (as determined by the commentary editor).
    • Meet weekly deadlines – handing stories in via email.
  • Photographers
    • Take photographs assigned by the photo editor.
    • Make appointments with the subjects.
    • Meet weekly deadlines – handing photos in as attachments via email, or in person via flash drive.
