World Dance Day performance

On April 29, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., the Gustavus Dance department will be performing an improvisational dance piece. The dance is set by Jeffery Peterson and Melisa Rolnick in the Linnaeus Arboretum and will feature dancers from all levels of technique classes. The performance is part of the department’s annual celebration of World Dance Day. This year it will also coincide with Arbor Day. … Continue reading World Dance Day performance

Smoking mad

Let me begin this little escapade in the defense of smoking by saying I don’t smoke. I don’t like cigarettes and think they’re disgusting. But I am the only one in my immediate family, who doesn’t smoke. I think that it’s a poor decision for individuals to make in general. Smoking itself has proven to have negative effects, and second-hand smoke can be harmful. That … Continue reading Smoking mad

Saying “I like you”: Creative party hosting

Hello, and I like you.’ This is what you’re saying when you invite somebody into your home, without having to hear yourself say it,” writes actress/comedian/author Amy Sedaris in her how-to book for hosting parties. Appropriately called I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence, Sedaris has filled her nearly 300-page hilarity with recipes, lists and decoration ideas to help us readers with the art of … Continue reading Saying “I like you”: Creative party hosting

Examining life in disarray

Today’s column is going to be a little different. In a month from now, hundreds of Gusties (including me) will graduate from this institution—a thought big enough to shake the usual coherence from my writing style. First thought: what next?  We all have plans—some more concrete than others—but there are a lot of things to think about.  We live in boxes and for the last … Continue reading Examining life in disarray

Frozen at 20?

It’s around a month until we all say our good-byes for the year and 75 percent of us will get to see each other next year. Dear Seniors, I can’t relate just yet, but seeing you all have minor and major meltdowns is making me seriously nervous. It’s amazing how easily I forget that I can’t be in college forever. Why can’t the best four … Continue reading Frozen at 20?

Believing in responsibility

Every year around this time, some controversy seems to erupt that gets everyone on campus talking. Past wars of words have ranged from college administrative politics to missing newspaper conspiracies. This year, the point of contention materializes in the question: “Can we be good without God?” It goes without saying that the formal debate addressing this topic on May 15 will hardly come close to … Continue reading Believing in responsibility

Re: Can we have Good without God?

Mr. Legeros has yet again written a dud of a column.  Instead of being so critical of the FCA for their upcoming event “Can we be good without God?” how about giving them some credit for organizing this event?  It doesn’t matter if they are sponsoring the event and participating in it and “yes and no” questions are very prevalent in everyday life (so yes … Continue reading Re: Can we have Good without God?

Re: In which our hero voices an unpopular opinion

I write in response to Mr. Lundborg’s recent commentary on the Fair Trade industry. I would agree that FT is not without its problems. It might not bring great economic success to developing countries, and I would applaud an effective plan to work with these countries in solidarity for a more just economic order. However, particularly looking at the chocolate industry, I would not so … Continue reading Re: In which our hero voices an unpopular opinion

Can We Be Good Without God?

The May 15 debate, “Can We Be Good Without God?” will consider the origin of human morality, particularly, is God and God’s Word the sole source for our understanding of good and evil? If not, where can we account for our shared human morality? If there is no God, would there be goodness? The event will be a formal debate between Christian apologist, and Southwest … Continue reading Can We Be Good Without God?

Men’s Golf hoping for NCAA Tournament berth

After a two year hiatus from the NCAA Division III Championships, the Gustavus Men’s Golf Team has suddenly thrust itself into strong consideration for one of the tournament’s at-large bids since winning last weekend’s St. John’s Invitational. With the win the Gusties are now ranked sixth in the nation after defeating the number one ranked Johnnies. The Gusties took home the team title with an … Continue reading Men’s Golf hoping for NCAA Tournament berth
