The Women’s Hockey team had a second consecutive NCAA Frozen Four appearance at the NCAA Women’s Hockey Championships in Rochester, N.Y. and is the Gustavus Women’s Team of the Year.
The Gusties battled through a tougher conference schedule this year after dominating the MIAC in previous years. The Gusties only lost two conference games against St. Thomas and St. Kate’s, and they also tied two games against St. Kate’s and Concordia. However, the Gusties earned another MIAC Championship in convincing fashion with a 3-0 win over Bethel, earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
After losing to UW-River Falls earlier this year, the Gusties beat the Falcons at River Falls 4-1 in the first round to advance to the NCAA Semifinals in New York. The Gusties faced tough opponents in Norwich and Middlebury and recorded the second consecutive fourth place finish in the NCAA Tournament, but not without a fight.
The Gusties faced a four-goal deficit heading into the third period against Norwich, but scored three times to fall just short in the Semifinals by a score of 5-4. The Gusties demonstrated tremendous heart throughout the season in pursuit of a National Championship.
The Gusties were led in scoring by Sophomore Lindsey Hjelm with 30 points on 12 goals and 18 assists and Junior Allie Schwab with 27 points on 15 goals and 12 assists.
The Women’s Hockey team finished with an overall record of 22-5-3 including a 14-2-2 record in the MIAC, a 10-3-0 mark away from Don Roberts and an unbeaten 12-0-3 mark at home.

Wow. You gurls have made it
OK so my new dream is that the Sioux win a noaatnil championship, and somebody brings a blowtorch out on the ice to remove “NCAA” from the trophy.
