Men’s athlete of the year: David Martinson

Gustavus Senior hockey player David Martinson was the most accomplished male athlete in Gustavus athletics for the 2009-10 school year. Besides leading the Gusties to an NCAA Quarterfinal finish, a 20-win season and a regular season MIAC crown, Martinson excelled on the ice more than any other Division III player in the nation. He received the 2010 Sid Watson Award, symbolic of the nation’s best Division III men’s hockey player.

Martinson also earned Player of the Year honors in the MIAC as well as First Team All-American status. Martinson led the MIAC in scoring with 23 goals, 36 points and game winning goals with 5. He led the NCAA with 1.04 goals per game, with 29 goals in 29 games. He ranked fifth nationally in points per game at 1.69, with 49 points in 29 games.

Throughout his hockey career at Gustavus, Martinson has been a standout athlete. Martinson compiled 76 goals and 55 assists for 131 points in 85 career games. He leaves Gustavus ranking third all-time with a 0.89 career goals per game average and fourth all-time with 1.54 career points per game.
