Gustie of the Week: Jessie Erickson

The guitar rests on Junior Jessie Erickson’s lap, her only companion in the dorm room as everyone else has left for break. Coaxed by the fortune cookie hanging on the wall over her bed reading, “sell your ideas they have exceptional merit,” she turns on the video camera and records her cover of “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore. The YouTube video began as an act of … Continue reading Gustie of the Week: Jessie Erickson

Letter to the Editor (9/13/2013)

I am not trying to criticize anyone in the Gustavus community because we are all here to learn, and there are different understandings of what being an educated and well-rounded person means to different people. However, I think the Gustavus community is lacking something that is necessary for interacting with today’s more diverse world. People in your future workplace or neighborhood might be from different … Continue reading Letter to the Editor (9/13/2013)

Volleyball has high potential and expectations

The 2013 Gustavus volleyball team consists of 20 players—none of which are seniors. The roster lists six juniors, eight sophomores, and six first-year players. The women ranked eleventh in the league in total kills, twelfth in … Continue reading Volleyball has high potential and expectations

Undeterred and unsatisfied

It read, “Her resignation is effective immediately.” Chaplain Rachel Larson served the Gustavus community for 12 years, yet the only information released about her abrupt departure is a 190-word email that was sent to Gustavus students, faculty, and staff this summer announcing her resignation. Sent June 28, 2013, the day following the 764-word email announcing President Ohle’s retirement which described his 5 years of service … Continue reading Undeterred and unsatisfied

Grammar

For many years I was what some consider a “Grammer Nazi.” I used to correct people when they meant “well” instead of “good” or snap at the use of the phrase “could you borrow me a pencil.” I had always been adamant that people should speak in a way that is elegant or “educated,” as some may define it, but over the past few years, … Continue reading Grammar

Where the wild things are no longer

A friend of mine asked me a particularly interesting question towards the end of last spring semester. She told me that a mountain lion had been responsible for taking a baby directly from a backyard in California. This mountain lion (or puma or cougar) then dragged the baby off in what was to become a fatal attack. Now the question she asked me was, how do … Continue reading Where the wild things are no longer
