Aren’t Intramurals supposed to be fun?

Over 60 percent of Gustavus students participate in intramural sports. It’s a way for peers to form teams, create friendly competition, and just have a good time playing a sport they aren’t necessarily the best at. Or at least that’s what I thought. I play on an intramural volleyball team. To put it generously, we aren’t the best. Currently, we’ve posted three wins on the season, … Continue reading Aren’t Intramurals supposed to be fun?

Women’s club hockey team a first for Gustavus

For the first time in its 151 year history, Gustavus has a women’s club hockey team. Last spring, Sophomore Casey Lindquist began the daunting process of assembling the program. It was no easy task for the first-year student at Gustavus. “It was a lot of work putting the team together. I talked to a lot of people, wrote a lot of emails, and made a lot of … Continue reading Women’s club hockey team a first for Gustavus

Gustie of the Week: Kelsey Abele

As a fourth generation Gustie, Senior Kelsey Abele knew she would be attending Gustavus since the minute her family told her she wouldn’t be allowed at Thanksgiving if she broke the string of family that had wandered the college throughout the ages. “I applied to other schools but I always knew I’d come here,” Kelsey said. “And I love it here. People toss around the word … Continue reading Gustie of the Week: Kelsey Abele

Classic Christmas films supply warmth during the cold

The holidays are here! Christmas is undoubtedly the holiday with the most movies centered on it, (looking at you Die Hard). Christmas movies allow directors to get away with portraying happiness and presenting deep morals that public service announcements wish they could teach, and every family usually has a traditional holiday classic they watch every year. Favorite Animated Movie: How the Grinch Stole Christmas Despite Hollywood’s … Continue reading Classic Christmas films supply warmth during the cold

Catching Fire sparks excitement in audiences

Everyone’s favorite victors screen in love in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) outsmarted the devious and tyrannical President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and his cabinet of men and women in charge of the 74th annual Hunger Games, which serves as the twisted reminder to the districts of Panem that the Capitol completely controls their lives. But the trials … Continue reading Catching Fire sparks excitement in audiences

Indie artists take over holiday music

Revamp your Christmas playlist with these fresh takes on Christmas classics. No matter how hard you may try, the perils of overplayed holiday music are nearly impossible to avoid. So dark the con of shopping

Black Friday: a day following the time of thanks, in which we trample over complete strangers for cheap material goods. This tradition is rooted in the unspoken forbiddance of Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving. True to our nature, we’ve pushed the big shopping day up as far as possible. This year, some stores had the gall to open on Thanksgiving Day. With violence and chaos now … Continue reading So dark the con of shopping

A writer’s guide to writing

Humans have always been interested in story telling. Everyone has a story to tell. Sure, not all stories are page turners or epics that burst with excitement (Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, for example), but they are still stories that need to be told. I find all stories to be worthwhile, even if I can’t finish them. It is still a story. Whether you know it or … Continue reading A writer’s guide to writing

Comfortable without my clothes on

College campuses are notoriously rife with expressions of nudity, and Gustavus is no different. Streaking is common across our campus; whether a public display at Midnight Express or a private run through the Arb, streaking is a tradition at our school, and we should not seek to shame, repress, or condemn it. Nudity encourages confidence, self-love, comfort in one’s own skin, celebration of the body, … Continue reading Comfortable without my clothes on
