Mikayla Miller and Lindsey Johnson awarded All-Conference honors

The Gustavus Women’s Basketball team had an extremely young squad this season. Finishing in a tie for third in the MIAC Conference in the regular season, the team exceeded many expectations. Their regular season finish was three spots higher than their preseason prediction.

“I was surprised and very excited when I was notified by my coach. To get that recognition as a freshman is really cool. I am very honored.”—Mikayla Miller

Two Gusties were selected to the MIAC All- Conference team. First-year Guard standout Mikayla Miller, who led the Gusties in scoring this season with 446 points, was the lone first-year selected to the MIAC All-Conference team. Junior Forward Lindsey Johnson, who was second on the team in scoring, was selected to her first All-Conference team, as well.

The two players were notified of this accomplishment by their coaches.

“I found out that I had been an All-Conference selection from my coach a day or so before the MIAC office announced it,” Johnson said.

Both players were very honored by this award.

“I was surprised and very excited when I was notified by my coach. To get that recognition as a freshman is really cool. I am very honored,” said Miller.

The team returns nearly all players from this season, losing only two seniors to graduation.

“We aren’t losing many players since we are so young, so I think we can really do something special next year,” Johnson said.

Her aspiration for her senior season includes a bid to the NCAA tournament.

“Ultimately, our goal is to do well in playoffs and make it to the NCAA tournament,” Johnson said.

With such a young team, much experience was gained this year. Two first-years and one sophomore were in the starting line-up for a majority of the season. With such a young starting line-up and two All-Conference players returning, the future is very exciting for Gustie Women’s Basketball.
