Cole Frazier-
In their MIAC opener, Gustavus Men’s soccer added another win to their record in a narrow score of 1-0 over previously undefeated Carlton Knights; making the Gusties’ overall record 6-0-1. The Gusties, being ranked number 6th in the country, looked to continue their conquering reign in becoming number one in the North. While Carlton attempted to continue their run of six games unbeaten.
The Gustie’s performance was epitomized by their defensive fortitude and domination of the game. Sophomore defender, Simon Woods, has continued to play a big role in the Gusties’ back line. When asked about the team’s defensive performance Woods commented, “Together, I believe our defensive unit has had a fantastic start to the season. We carried that momentum into the Carleton game earthing another clean sheet. The success comes from the whole team competing together and for each other across the field making everybody’s jobs easier.”
It has been a fantastic start to the season for the Gusties’ defensive line. Remarkably, over the past five games, the men have held teams to six shots on goal. The Gusties only allowed one shot against Carlton, while the Gusties mustered an impressive nine shots on goal.
The one and only goal of the game came in the 35th minute with Sophomore Leo Runestad scoring his first collegiate goal. It began the Gusties’ press which forced the Knights to cough up the ball to Fifth-year Owen Johnson. Johnson drove through the middle of the pitch, pushing past multiple Carlton defenders. He cleverly laid the ball off to Runestad who found himself one-on-one with the Knights’ goalie. He took a moment to compose himself and smashed it into the rough of the net past the flailing Knights’ keeper.
Goal scorer Leo Runstead spoke after the game, “We were well prepared going into the game. Our scheme helped us to win the game. We looked to win second balls and press hard. It resulted in a turnover which led to the goal assisted by Owen.”
After speaking to so many players on the team, the players are very quick to give credit to their teammates which speaks volumes on the mentality of the team. Runestead is just one of many players who have given a great deal of credit to their teammates rather than talk about their individual success.
The Gusties will look to continue their momentum into their game at 3:30 p.m. this Saturday at home against the undefeated Macalester.
