Intramurals provide fun athletic outlet

One thing many students miss from high school is their involvement in sports. While Gustavus has a number of varsity sports, not all students have the time to dedicate to a varsity team. An alternative many choose is to participate in intramural sports.

One such student is first-year Zakariya Khan, who is a part of an intramural soccer team. Khan has been playing soccer since he was ten years old and didn’t want to give up the sport entirely.

“I don’t have time for varsity sports. Intramural soccer is laid back and I can have all my good friends as teammates,” Khan said.

With intramural sports, you are able to relax and just enjoy the game. You do not need to have experience or much knowledge in the sport to participate. First-year Liz Toeben joined women’s outdoor volleyball as well as co-ed football at Gustavus. During her years in high school, she was a basketball and softball player.

“I joined the intramural team instead of the actual team because I don’t want to play competitively,” Toeben said.

The top intramural sports participated in on campus are men’s basketball, men’s hockey, co-ed broomball, and men’s futsal. Because so many people participate in these sports they are more competitive. Therefore, if you are looking to join an action filled game those, are your best bet. This should not deter the women on campus from joining though because the more women joining intramural sports, the more fun it can be. If you end up becoming the champion of your intramural, the achievement will not go by unnoticed.

“All champions are awarded an Intramural Championship t-shirt at the night of the Championship Round. It is very popular,” Director of Intramurals Justin DeGrood said.

Whether you are joining intramural sports to play competitively or for fun, it is a great way to stay in shape.
