Wes Moore, an army veteran and advocate for helping kids find the support they need, is the author of this year’s Reading in Common book, The Other Wes Moore. Moore will be speaking on campus Tuesday, Sept. 11th in Christ Chapel, after which there will be an opportunity for book signing.
The Other Wes Moore was chosen as the Reading in Common book because it fit the goals and aims put forth by the facilitators of the Reading in Common program.
“The book focuses on relevant issues, including transition issues and those relevant to our community and world,” Director of Student Activities Megan Ruble said.
“During his speaking appearance, Moore will be going deeper into the subject matter of the book. He was also sent questions proposed by the first-year students in their book discussions and may address some of them,” Ruble said.
Gustie Greeter groups discussed Wes Moore’s book as part of the Orientation experience.
“Our group got down to some nitty-gritty details. It was really intriguing,” Senior Joe Turner said.
“Once I got into the book, it was a really good read,” first-year Lisa Slaikeu said. “It allowed our group to have a really thought-provoking discussion.”
As the school year progresses, Ruble hopes the students will keep Moore’s book in mind.
“The book’s themes are always relevant,” Ruble said. “I think one purpose of the Reading in Common program is to meet students where they are, and push them a little beyond that. This book does that.”
