After not qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the past two seasons, the Men’s Golf team earned an at-large bid to participate in the Championships at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. from Tuesday, May 10 through Friday, May 13. Because of this, the team is the Gustavus Men’s Team of the Year.
The Gusties recorded a first place finish, two second place finishes and two fifth place finishes in the fall, and then improved in the spring to take first in two out of their three events, including defeating the second-ranked Johnnies at the 16-team St. John’s Invitational in late April. The Gusties also took first in the St. Thomas/St. John’s Triangular event and second place in the 16-team field at the Bobby Krig Invite.
However, the Gusties’ greatest strength may be in their youth, as the team is made up of three first-years and two sophomores. Sophomores Alex Kolquist and Trevor Gervais lead the Gusties in stroke average with 73.75 and 74.13, respectively. The trio of first-years, Simon Erlandsson, Tyler McMorrow and Andrew Oakes, ranks first in Division III in first-year scoring.
The team’s rise to qualify for the NCAA Championships this spring was largely unexpected due to the average results in the fall. The Gusties placed fifth in the MIAC Championship, finishing 30 strokes behind MIAC champions St. John’s. Yet, the Gusties rebounded this spring to beat the Johnnies and finish only four strokes behind them at the Bobby Krig Invite.
At the conclusion of the second round on Wednesday, the Gusties were in 17th place as a team, led by Alex Kolquist, who is tied for 19th at (+1). Andrew Oakes is tied for 47th at (+5) and Simon Erlandsson and Tyler McMorrow are at (+11).
