The May 15 debate, “Can We Be Good Without God?” will consider the origin of human morality, particularly, is God and God’s Word the sole source for our understanding of good and evil? If not, where can we account for our shared human morality? If there is no God, would there be goodness?
The event will be a formal debate between Christian apologist, and Southwest Minnesota FCA director, Jon Kaus and former Pentecostal preacher turned atheist and president of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, Dan Barker. The evening will follow a typical debate format, moderated by a Gustavus faculty member, with an opportunity for a question and answer session following the arguments and cross-examination. There will be no announced “winner;” that is for guests to decide personally. FCA is sponsoring this event as an opportunity for the Gustavus campus and surrounding community to challenge and expand individual preconceptions of morality from two highly educated, articulate and passionate men, who are representative of two of the many diverse sets of beliefs present at Gustavus. Please consider joining us May 15, at 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
