Gustavus Football Overpowers Augsburg

Staff Writer- Katie Thomas

On November 8, 2025, Augsburg University hosted Gustavus Adolphus College in one of the final football games of the regular season for both programs. The game was played on a cold and windy afternoon in Minneapolis, where both teams were able to showcase their abilities. When the final whistle blew, the Gusties had fought hard and controlled the game, defeating Augsburg 31 to 10. The game showcased Gustavus’s offensive precision, defensive discipline, and overall cohesion, beating the Auggies on their home turf.

From the opening kickoff, Gustavus Adolphus displayed a level of energy and execution that set the tone for the entire game. Quarterback Dylan Blount, a sophomore on the Gustavus team, led his team with incredible poise, completing 25 of 31 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns. His accuracy and ability to make quick decisions were evident from the first drive. Gustavus worked hard to move the ball down the field, making strong passes and fast runs allowed running back Sophomore Walker Hennen to finish the day with 81 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Augsburg’s defense made Gustavus work for every yard they got, but Blount’s ability to extend plays and find open receivers consistently broke their rhythm. The first quarter ended with Gustavus leading 10 to 0 after a touchdown pass from Blount to tight end Junior Jordan Wold and a field goal from their kicker, Senior Owen Forsythe. Augsburg’s offense couldn’t break down the Gustie defense and struggled to gain momentum. They managed just 32 rushing yards all game, evidence of Gustavus’s disciplined defensive front. During the second quarter, Augsburg fans had a brief moment of hope. After a defensive stand that forced a Gustavus punt, the Auggies capitalized on a fumble recovery deep in Gustie territory. This turnover set up their lone touchdown drive of the game. It was capped by a short scoring run that cut the deficit to 10 to 7 heading into halftime. Despite the score tightening, the game told a different story, and Gustavus was in control of the tempo. Even as Augsburg trimmed the lead, Gustavus didn’t let up and didn’t let them score another touchdown. Gustavus’s aggressive and disciplined defense forced two fumbles and an interception, keeping Augsburg’s offense constantly on its heels.

Coming out of halftime, Gustavus Adolphus made it clear that any Augsburg momentum would be short-lived. The third quarter shut down the Auggies and put Gustavus ahead. Blount engineered two long, balanced drives, both resulting in touchdowns. The first came on an amazing pass to Senior Dom Mathies, who beat his defender down the sideline for a 40-yard score. The second came after a defensive takeaway, when linebacker pressure caused Augsburg’s quarterback to fumble, setting Gustavus up in prime field position. 2 plays later, Hennen powered into the end zone from five yards out, extending the lead to 24 to 7, solidifying the Gustie lead. Gustavus’s defensive line continued to shut down the Auggies and also consistently won at the point of attack, forcing hurried throws and limiting Augsburg’s already anemic run game. In the fourth quarter, Gustavus added one final touchdown to finish off the game. Blount found Mathies again in the back of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown, his third passing score of the day. That put the game effectively out of reach at 31 to 7. Augsburg managed a late field goal, but the Gusties were too far ahead for a comeback. The Gusties really controlled the game and outgained Augsburg 428 yards to 167. They also held the ball for over 35 minutes, converting 7 of 13 third-down attempts compared to Augsburg’s 1 of 12. One of the biggest victories of the game was that Gustavus committed no turnovers, while Augsburg gave the ball away three times. Blount’s chemistry with Wold and Mathies exemplified the team’s growth in timing and trust. The defensive unit, anchored by an aggressive front seven, also proved its ability to control games through physicality and discipline.

The 2025 Augsburg vs. Gustavus football game showcased Gustavus not only the amazing offensive plays but how well the defense can put other teams under pressure and force mistakes. Their 31 to 10 win symbolized what can happen when a team plays with balance, focus, and cohesion on both sides of the ball. Next, Gustavus plays Macalester on Saturday, November 15th, on their home field. It will be Senior/parents day, so come out and support the Gusties!
