Laughter was brought to the Gustavus campus this past week when comedian Sammy Obeid took the stage in the Courtyard Cafe.
Obeid is a highly regarded comedian who has appeared on shows like America’s Got Talent as well as a show on The Food Network.
Obeid is also known for his 1,001 day streak of comedy performances which began in December of 2010.
He was profiled in TIME Magazine and was written about in The New York Times.
In addition to these two publications, Obeid was also complemented in LA Weekly as well as given positive reviews of his performances in LA Mag.
The events coordinator, senior Samantha Johnson, mentioned that the show had been planned since last spring.
“We went to a conference last spring and they had a ton of musicians, comedians, performers of all types and we reserved him through that,” Johnson said.
Johnson was able to watch a small act performed by Obeid and based the decision off of that.
“[Obeid] performed a little five minute, ten minute intro to his set and we got a little taste of what he does. Since we went through the conference, we talked with his agent right away and talked through the contract…we emailed him a few weeks ago and figured out all the rest of it,” Johnson said.
Obeid used his comedy in a way that seemed to capture the audience and keep students engaged throughout the performance.
He employed many puns and wordplay which seemed successful at garnering quite a few laughs.
“I drink goat milk and by goat milk I meant “‘Greatest of All Time,’” Obeid said.
This was one of his many wordplays that students responded well to.
Obeid used very modern and youth-oriented material that appealed to college-aged kids as well.
He talked about a wider variation of content that was relatable to Gustavus students and any young adult, really.
Obeid also got great reviews from the Campus Activities Board Co-President Senior, Connor Myhre.
“The students here really seem to enjoy Sammy. There’s lots of laughter happening and they’re really enjoying they’re really enjoying the funny moments that he is providing for our campus,” Myhre said.
The Courtyard Cafe was filled with smiles and laughter after Obeid’s humor-packed show.
His use of storytelling and past experiences gave audiences a chance to relate to his content, while also getting the opportunity to find humor in different kinds of situation.
