This week’s campus movie is a modern spin on the ‘80s classic, The Karate Kid. Director Howard Zwart has the remake follow a similar course as the original, with main differences being the location of the film (set in Beijing, China) and the cast.
Those of us who loved the original Karate Kid can take solace in the fact that the plot stays relatively the same; a seemingly wimpy kid finds courage and inner strength while kicking the crap out of infamous bullies. This time, however, the bullied new kid in town is played by Jaden Smith, and his wise teacher is played by the legendary Jackie Chan.
For those of us who haven’t seen it, here’s a preview of the revamped Karate Kid: A single mom loses her job as it is outsourced to China and is forced to move to Beijing to find work. Her son, Dre Parker, immediately finds trouble as the American outsider who befriends a beautiful Chinese girl. The Kung Fu thugs who rule the school that Dre attends target him and a proverbial butt kicking ensues. Rescued by the maintenance guy in Dre’s apartment building, Mr. Han takes Dre under his wing and teaches him the skills he needs to stand up to his enemies.
The reincarnation of this time-honored theme did wonders in the box office, raking in over $56 million in its debut weekend in June and although the reviews fall all over the spectrum, it’s definitely worth seeing. Especially when it’s on campus during Orientation Week. The film will be shown Saturday through Monday night at 9:30 p.m. in the Wallenberg Auditorium of Nobel Hall. If nothing else, it’ll leave you wanting to try out your best impression of Kung Fu mastery around campus and everyone knows we’d all love to see that.
