Dog Day Afternoon is a lot like a good episode of The Jerry Springer Show. It has some criminals, a rowdy crowd and a married man who is stealing money to help pay for the sex-change operation of his extra-marital lover. Story of my life … but seriously. Based on a true story, Dog Day Afternoon (1975) stars baby-face Al Pacino as Sonny Wortzick, a … Continue reading Throwback of the Week: Dog Day Afternoon
With the last few weeks of warm weather quickly flying by, Gustavus students are doing everything they can to spend as much time outside as possible. Few people do this more often than the Ultimate Frisbee team. From tossing a frisbee around in front of the C. Charles Jackson Campus Center in between classes to attending afternoon practices, the Ultimate team members take full advantage … Continue reading The Ultimate Game
This summer was a summer of clouds. At work, on the beach, in the car, I always seemed to have my head raised toward the sky. There’s just something about that sometimes fluffy, sometimes wispy, sometimes doomful stuff above me that leaves me in awe. My obsession started last fall when I took the weather and climate class in the geography department here at Gustavus. … Continue reading Take a look at the sky
Like many on this campus, I thoroughly enjoy sleeping. whether it’s napping, going to bed early or sleeping late. It seems like a natural right for people our age. Yes, some may have to rouse themselves for 8:00 a.m. class, but their collective suffering is an edifying force among those who drudge themselves out of bed at such an ungodly hour. Sleeping time should be … Continue reading Unwanted Guest
Cogito, ergo sum. Imbimbo navitas, ergo cogito. (I think, therefore I am. I drink energy drinks, therefore I think.) -Descartes When my brain isn’t working properly it usually needs a violent kick in the face. My brain knows this and it tries very hard to respond to my demands. It does have some level of respect for me. But sometimes it forgets its place. It … Continue reading Who needs sleep when there’s caffeine?
There are occasional points in my bouts of contemplation where I have noticed I seem to go “too deep,” where normal human things begin to look stranger and stranger until I get to the point that the only way to return to feeling normal is through an uncomfortable rehabilitative process. These tracts of my life where I go “too deep” can last hours, days or … Continue reading Through the looking glass of oblivion
I had the delight of seeing Gustavus billboards this summer in my hometown of Rochester, Minnesota. Seeing these signs made me want to get out of my car and take a picture next to the billboard and the Greenway gas station. After the school spirit wore off, I realized what the Gustavus sign actually said: “Make Your Life Count.” Wait a second. Did that sign … Continue reading Make Your Life Count
In response to The Weekly’s article about the renovation of the Lundgren House, we would like to offer another part of the story. For the 2009-2010 school year, we lived in Lundgren House as part of Residential Life’s ILS program. In the spring of 2010, we reapplied to live in the house after already being guaranteed the spot by Resiential Life. We were accepted into … Continue reading Prepare Ministries ILS House
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the students, faculty and administration who showed such overwhelming support for the 9/11 Never Forget Memorial last Friday. We had over 70 people help set up the flags and over 35 show up in the rain for the candlelight service. We will definitely continue to host this event in the future, as we have for years past. … Continue reading 9/11 Never Forget Memorial
