Guessing Your Major Based on Your Favorite Muppet

Staff Writer- Emily Anderson

Class registration is coming up. Alarms are set, and the MyGustavus plan you worked on and was approved by your advisor is ready to go. All that’s left to do is click the register button, and your next semester is all set.

However, it can be such a chore to pick classes out, especially if you don’t know what your major will be. But never fear! Your fearless opinion writer, Emily “2016” Anderson, is here to solve your problems for good. This is a guide to pick a major based on the Muppets! While not every major or Muppet is accounted for in this guide (partially because there is sadly a limit to the length of this article), here are some of my favorites.

Miss Piggy – Management. This girlboss may have some bossy qualities, but she is direct and knows how to lead a group of people. She is always dressed for success and has a plan to succeed.

Janice – Peace Studies. So groovy, man! This absolute icon knows how to bring tranquility and good vibes into any space. Much like how Janice is in a band, this major works well with lots of other majors, like Political Science or Geography.

Scooter – Computer Science. While he can be a little nerdy at times, his attention to detail and dedication help to make the Muppets show run smoothly. His use of technology supports the Muppet cast!

Oscar the Grouch – Environmental Studies. As an ES major, I know that I have been thrifting, garage sale-ing, and even dumpster diving to score new cool things. (reduce, reuse, recycle y’all). I also think that many of us can get bogged down by the current climate news, hence the grouchy part.

Sam the Eagle – Political Science. He is well-versed in the Constitution and current events and is not afraid to make his opinions known to the other Muppets. He is always seeking justice and understanding.

Honeydew – Biology. Honeydew is always trying new experiments, often with Beaker as his Guinea pig. Honeydew spends a ton of time in the Muppet Lab, much like our beloved biology majors.

Beaker – Chemistry. Beaker is a little chaotic and a little confused, which is exactly how I feel in chem lab. He is not afraid to try new things (well, for the most part) and is also always working in the Muppet Lab. Even better, the combination of the two makes biochem!

Fozzie Bear – Communications. Waka Waka! Fozzie Bear is always trying to make people laugh, and good communication skills are needed to help him succeed. He is a super social bear who understands others well.

Count – Math. One, two, hahahah. Seriously, this one was a no-brainer! Count loves counting and all things math, which makes him a great pick for this major! Even if the going gets tough, he will laugh through and continue to prevail!

Walter – Philosophy. Am I a man? Or am I a Muppet? A modern-day philosophy to better understand and push new ways of thinking of the self. Walter questions a lot of things in his life to better understand himself and the world around him, like a philosophy major.

Swedish Chef – Scandinavian Studies. No one understands Swedish food, language, and culture better than the chef from Sweden himself! Scandinavian Studies majors understand this area of the world well and with pride, just like this happy chef.

Gonzo – Physics. Always planning his next stunt, Gonzo needs to understand the physics of his cannon launching, hoop jumping, and next performance! Physics majors, while not frequently shot out of cannons, do have to complete complex problems, like Gonzo!

Statler and Waldorf – Theater. While not on the Muppet stage, no one knows the theater better than these two. While often critical of the crazy Muppet antics, these two understand what makes a good show!

Electric Mayhem – Music majors. Music majors often are found singing or playing instruments, even when not in class. They can often be found in many ensembles, or even in their own bands, determined to perfect their art!

Elmo – Education. Elmo has taught generations of kids the importance of learning. Whether it be skills like reading and writing or problem-solving, Elmo helps others thrive!

Animal – Psychology. While he can sometimes lose his cool, he knows strategies to help himself regulate. Animal understands the importance of mental health and well-being, especially taking time to do something that makes you happy, like drumming!

Kermit – Sociology and Anthropology. Kermit understands the importance of the connection between people and how they are in society (some might even argue the Rainbow Connection). He is good at understanding how the Muppets fit together as a group.
