Fraternity hosts 3rd annual Africa Jam Concert

As  part of Greek Life, each fraternity and sorority aims to make a difference either here at Gustavus or through a philanthropy. This weekend Omega Kappa Fraternity will be hosting their philanthropic event: the third annual Africa Jam Charity Concert.

This event hosted by the Omega Kappa Fraternity will raise money for Africa Jam. According to Senior Biology major, member of Omega Kappa, and head of the Africa Jam Concert, Sam Leske, the Africa Jam organization was started by Gustavus Alumni Ellen Ruiters.

“She started this program which is all about helping the youth in Cape Town, South Africa,” Leske said.

The vision of the organization is to provide hope and unity to the youth in Cape Town, with the space that has been created there for them. At the organization in South Africa they spend a lot of time on faith based music.

“Hopefully we will see more progress for this coming year and future concerts to come” – Tyler Stoltzman

“Music is really big to them, they spend a lot on music and that’s where we got the idea for a concert.” Leske said.

This years concert will take place on Saturday, April 30 from 8-10 pm in Lund Arena. Tickets for the concert are $5 and can be purchased ahead of time or at the door. The concert will feature Mill City Collective, a large rap group from the Minneapolis area, local hip hop artist J. Plaza, and well known Connecticut native and hip hop artist, Oncue, who is flying in from performing at Coachella to perform at this concert.

In being part of the Omega Kappa fraternity, The Africa Jam Charity Concert is an event that all of the members take great pride in, and look forward to all year. This school year they started planning for the concert in December. The members of Omega Kappa are excited for the concert this Saturday when they will see all of their hard work pay off.

“Being a part of it and having all that hard work for a year is really rewarding. This is one of my favorite events of the year,” Junior Biology major and Co-President of the Omega Kappa Fraternity, Austin Jensen said.

This year, the fraternity hopes to increase both concert attendance and donations for Africa Jam, from the past two years.

“The 1st year we raised around $1,500 and the 2nd year we raised around $2,000.  So hopefully we will see more progress for this coming year and future concerts to come,” Senior Psychological Science major and Co-President of the Omega Kappa Fraternity, Tyler Stoltzman said.

All proceeds from the concert will go directly to the Africa Jam organization, and will help in keeping it up and running as a safe place for the youth of South Africa.
