While many people are streaming Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, or catching up on The Walking Dead, the upcoming fall season on TV has a lot of shows people might not want to miss. Whether new, returning, or ending, there’s plenty of dramas, comedies, and investigations to go around with what networks like ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and the CW are offering.
The popular comedies like CBS’s Big Bang Theory and ABC’s Modern Family are returning, but new shows will attempt to have similar success. One of these is Black-ish on ABC, which focuses on a middle class African-American suburban family that explores their cultural roots.
NBC’s A To Z looks to be the rom-com people are looking forward to, comparing it to How I Met Your Mother, because “The Mother,” Cristin Milioti, is one of the leads.
There’s plenty of crime dramas afoot as well. One of which is Gracepoint on FOX, a remake of the British drama Broadchurch, which stars former Doctor Who star David Tennant. The NCIS franchise will also expand with NCIS: New Orleans on CBS, and How to Get Away with Murder on ABC, which features a law professor and her students getting caught up in a murder plot.
While DC comics may not share Marvel’s success on the big screen, they are looking to have a wide variety of shows on the small screen. Gotham, on Fox is taking place in a Batman universe where Bruce isn’t Batman yet. The crime drama will star Ben McKenzie as Comissioner Gordon, and will focus on the events and characters after the fateful night in which Bruce’s parents were killed, including the untold origins of Batman’s famous rogues gallery such as Catwoman and the Penguin.
On NBC the audience will be given Constantine based on DC’s Hellblazer comic that stars Matt Ryan as John Constantine, a supernatural detective who is set to protect humanity from a dark threat. This isn’t Constantine’s first appearance in media (As there was a failed Keanu Reeves movie that had little to do with the character), but it looks to be his most memorable.
Most of these pilots have been leaked online, but the one that has gotten the most positive attention is The Flash on CW. Following the success of Arrow (Which will have a third season), CW has decided to give the scarlet speedster a run on their network with Grant Gustin as the lead, Barry Allen. The Flash is one of the most iconic and popular DC superheroes, but a lot of people wouldn’t be aware of that due to the focus on Batman and Superman.
Marvel also has a few shows lined up. Season 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be showing on ABC, with the addition of Agent Carter in January, focusing on the female lead from Captain America: The First Avenger. If you want Marvel to have shows that focus more on Marvel superheroes, while they won’t have any this fall, they have a lineup starting next year on Netflix, beginning with Daredevil.
There will also be many goodbyes to long running or critically acclaimed shows. The period crime drama Boardwalk Empire has begun its fifth and final season in early September which received positive reviews. Also taking one last ride is Sons of Anarchy on FX, this motorcycle drama has been one of the network’s highest rated shows and has lasted for seven seasons.
It will also be the beginning of the end for Two and a Half Men on CBS. The show has its large mix of fans and critics but still survived twelve seasons despite controversy from main cast members Charlie Sheen and Angus Jones.
Nickelodeon has announced that Legend of Korra’s final season will debut on Oct. 3, and will be titled Book 4: Balance. Despite the show’s large fanbase consisting of old fans from Avatar: The Last Airbender and the new generation, season 3 suffered low ratings and was distributed on Nickolodeon’s website, season 4 will focus on Korra’s recovery from what happened in the last season.
However there is a show coming back from the dead for a guest appearance on another cartoon. Futurama will crossover with The Simpsons in November. This won’t be the only crossover for Matt Groening’s creation, as they’ll also cross paths with Seth McFarlane’s Family Guy. So before you search the internet for reruns, turn on the T.V. and give the new episodes of this season a chance.
