Kate Wittenstein
Cathy invited Greg Kaster (History) and me (History) to attend her wedding because we knew her as a student at Gustavus, we have supported her work to end homelessness in Hennepin County, and we are strong supporters of marriage equality. Needless to say, we were honored to be invited. Minnesota is now the 12th state to recognize same-sex marriage. Cathy had two majors at Gustavus. One was Communications Studies. I don’t know the other. Again, the alumni office should have that information.
Cathy and Margaret were the first same-sex couple to be married in Minnesota. The Mayor presided over the midnight ceremony at City Hall. I am told the crowd of celebrants reached one thousand. Obviously, the occasion was highly emotional for everyone there. It was a joyous occasion that brought everyone together in shared happiness for Cathy, Margaret, and their son Louie. Among the crowd, I also noted a tremendous amount of pride in the state of Minnesota.
