Reject: A new Viking’s stadium

If you were to open up the Star Tribune any day in the past month you would likely find an article related to the Minnesota Vikings “needing” a new stadium. This is an issue not only pertinent to the sports culture of Minnesota but our political culture.

A new stadium will require a total funding upwards of 1.1 billion dollars. The state would be committing around 300 million dollars – the Vikings ownership group would be committing 400 million dollars, which leaves between 350-400 million dollars that would need to be raised by taxes on Ramsey County. A half-cent sales tax addition in Ramsey County would raise an estimated 350 million dollars. The tax would only be enforced in Ramsey County and not state-wide because according to the stadium’s plans and those suggesting this deal, it is Ramsey County that would be the only area receiving the economic “benefit” of having the Vikings Stadium in their county.

This is all fundamentally incorrect, as stadiums do not perform as long term economic beneficiaries to their communities. Stadiums in fact are a vacuum for all economic activity within their surroundings. The Metrodome has been around for nearly thirty years, and I think we’re still waiting for economic activity to be sparked surrounding the ‘dome. Think about the Metrodome area: the last time I went to a Vikings game I remember seeing a light-rail transportation system, lots of warehouses and one bar within proximity of the stadium. Not exactly a bubbling economy.

It is negligent to think that by replacing the Metrodome in Minneapolis or in Arden Hills that, for some reason, hundreds of restaurants, bars or memorabilia stores would sprout up from the cracks in the cement.

According to the Business Journal website, it costs an estimated 85.4 billion dollars to support a Major League Baseball team, 37.6 billion dollars to support a National Hockey League team, 36.7 billion dollars to support a National Football League team and 34.2 billion dollars to support a National Basketball Association team. Minnesota has one professional sports team in all of the leagues which adds up to 193.9 billion dollars needed to support those four teams.

The wages of Wins Journal presents the metric of “Total personal income (TPI)”: the sum of all money earned by all residents of an area in a given year. Using team revenue data and average ticket prices, one can calculate the amount of TPI needed to adequately support a team in each North American professional sports league.

The TPI of the Minneapolis and Bloomington markets is 154.8 billion dollars. This means that within the Minneapolis-Bloomington market our professional sports teams are being overextended by 39.4 billion dollars. By comparison the Las Vegas-Paradise, Nev. markets has a TPI of 69.3 billion dollars, and, being as no professional sports teams reside in Las Vegas, that entire 69.3 billion is available to be invested in a franchise.

It would be mutually beneficial to the Minneapolis-Bloomington market of Minnesota and the Las Vegas-Paradise market of Nevada and the NFL from an economic standpoint to move the Minnesota Vikings to Las Vegas. The only value in keeping the Vikings is an intangible goodwill that comes from the enjoyment of consuming Minnesota Vikings football as a fan.

There are 35 metropolitan areas throughout the U.S. and Canada that have over 36.7 billion in available personal income. Minneapolis is not one of those areas that can feasibly and economically support the Minnesota Vikings at this time.

Considering the Minneapolis market structure, one of our four major professional sports teams should be moved out of the state and into a market hungrier for a team if the league wants to capitalize and work more efficiently.

If you are a fan that does enjoy consuming Minnesota Viking football, do not complain about an additional sales tax or the junky stadium the Vikings are in today. The Twins, Timberwolves and Wild all have relatively new and state of the art facilities. If one team has to go, it is hard to argue it shouldn’t be the Vikings.

Governor Dayton describes the plans to readdress the stadium issue as existing in “limbo.” For any raise in taxes to occur a special session of congress is required in the state of Minnesota. Dayton plans to readdress congress Nov. 21 and if significant steps are not taken, Vikings fans may want to think about investing in a number 28 PETERSON jersey that is black and red and reads LAS VEGAS VIKINGS.

  1. I’ve read a lot of articles and news reports on the stadium debate, from both sides of the argument, in the last two years. This has got to be one of the worst I have seen. Did you not hear that the sales tax plan was nixed? They are coming up with other funding options besides that, and those most likely will be gambling generated tax dollars and a hefty investment from the team.

I am a proponent to the stadium, but am for a reasonable, acceptable solution that keeps the team here. I was at the Ramsey county public hearings and it is clear people do not want the sales tax involved. That was echoed by the lawmakers and the governor, so they are working on other solutions. I agree with that. We have a chance to have a publically owned stadium that is unique in the way that it combines public/private spending with NO existing tax dollars. Not one cent from the general fund. Also, your numbers from the business journal are very vague. Are you talking about operating costs of a new staadium? If so, the Vikings Arden Hills plan has them paying the estimated $20 million annual operating costs.

And Vegas? The threat is from Los Angeles. This is seriously the first place I have seen Vegas even mentioned.

Please tell me you wrote this article as a joke, because you are severely misinformed.

  2. Wow that is just so wrong its not even funny. Oh my god. half a cent. we are all gunna die now. oh please get a life, learn how to blog, and maybe you’ll find a penny to use half on the new vikes stadium

  3. Its amazing that crap like this can even be put on the internet. Its funny how he mentions that the metrodome, which was a piece of crap when it was built is said to not have any impact on the area, but fails to mention how businesses around the state of the art Target Field are thrieving! Not to mention how great the wild do in the excel or how great TCF Bank stadium has been great for the U! Also since the 55 million dollars to build the metrodome was spent, the state has racked in around 350 million dollars back from that facility. Where is this states reinvestment back for a bunch of cheap citizens that put three major sports teams in one facility! MINNESOTA IS CHEAP!

    1. Thank you, I have reetncly been searching for information about this topic for ages and yours is the best I have discovered so far.

  4. This article is absolute bullshit. Are you an idiot? First of all, the Vikings are considering moving to LOS ANGELES, not LAS VEGAS. Strike 1. This article is so incorrect and has so much false information, you must be insane. Strike 2. And by the way, I don’t know where you’re from but a 1/2 cent tax will not kill you. I agree with everyone on here. THIS ARTICLE IS A JOKE AND A LOUSY ARTICLE. You must be a Packers fan.

  5. I feel kind of bad now that I made the first comment on this guy’s article, and I started the avalanche of criticism. But the author is very misinformed. Probably a college kid just trying to write and get his name in print. Try again kid. Just do some research frist, try to gage some opinions from both sides, and form some points of view from that.

  6. Let all the idits who want a stadium pay for it them self. Tax payers don’t build me a place to work

    1. I agree. Better to be 10 picks early than one pick too late. And it wasn’t only Washington, but Miami as well. Ponder was one of the few pro-ready QBs in the draft, with teams like Washington and Miami looking for fsihined products. Ponder would not have made it to the Vikes’ pick at in the 2nd, and possibly could’ve been taken by a team in the early 1st who traded up. At the Vikes 2nd pick, most of the top QBs would’ve been gone. Enough stop-gaps, find a guy and build around him

  8. Hi,

Really mind blowing blog. I am totally speechless. Great information. There are 35 metropolitan areas throughout the U.S. and Canada that have over 36.7 billion in available personal income. Minneapolis is not one of those areas that can feasibly and economically support the Minnesota Vikings at this time. Minneapolis, nicknamed “City of Lakes” and the “Mill City,” is the county seat of Hennepin County, the largest city in the state of Minnesota, and the 48th largest in the United States. Its name is attributed to the city’s first schoolteacher, who combined mni, the Dakota word for water, and polis, the Greek word for city. Bar Sport is the best option to get pub for lease.

    1. There is no way in the world he is not coming back. The drama queen is ttseing himself up for an excuse if he doesn’t play well, and once again making himself the center of attention. If you really believe he’s not coming back, I have a lovely bit of property to show you in downtown Lefor. It’s right on the beach

    1. Ponder is the most pro ready qb in this year’s draft. He’s very smart, athletic and ran a pro-style oensffe at fsu. He will have a better season than cam newton. The only thing newton has is athleticism and you need more than just athleticism to be a great qb.

  12. This was all started by the Romans, They know we can not live with out football. So all the talk about how things will be done and the great help it will be to the city and the fans. Is an old movie played over and over. They will get what they want no matter what. I rest my case!

  13. It¡¦s in reality a nice and helpful piece of information. I am happy that you simply shared this useful info with us. Please stay us up to date like this. Thanks for sharing.

  15. From what I hear this is what their new stadium will look like. It is only a scale model of the actual building though.
