How to Reuse Your Old Weeklys

Newspaper Slippers

What You’ll Need:

– Stapler

– Glue

– Tape

Heather Pallas.

Disposable newspaper slippers are perfect for yardwork, painting and lounging outside.

1. For the soles, stack 12 pages of newspaper on top of one another. Draw an outline around both of your feet on the top page.

2. Staple the heel or side of the shape to hold the papers together, then cut out the shape.

For the strap, take a half sheet of newspaper and fold it into fourths, or until its about three inches wide. Repeat for the other slipper.

3. Lift up the top six pages of one slipper and slide one end of the strap in each side so it loops over the top. The strap will cover a third of the slipper, leaving room for the toes. Staple the straps in place on each side. Repeat on the other slipper.

4. Bring down the remaining 6 layers of the sole and glue down, then bind the front edge of the slipper with tape.

Pirate Hat

Heather Pallas.

There are many types of hats you can make out of newspaper; party hats, fireman’s hat, rain hat and pressman’s hat. Though these are all fun, the pirate hat is a classic. To make one, you’ll need a full newspaper page and a stapler.

1. Place a four page section of the newspaper on the table with the fold away from you.

2. Fold corners A and B to met at the center.

3. Fold up the bottom edges.

4. Staple, tape or fold over each of the outside corners, C and D.

Nail Art

Chelsea Johnson.

Step 1:

Apply two coats of a beige or neutral nail polish, let dry. Apply clear varnish. Take the

newspaper and choose a section you want to put on your nails as the design. Cut out 10 small pieces, about 1”x.5”, one for each fingernail.

Step 2:

Once your nails are dry and the pieces of newspaper are cut, it’s time to get the rubbing alcohol out. Dip each nail and apply each piece of newspaper individually.

Step 3:

After applying the newspaper to your nails, press with a paper towel or washcloth. Hold it on the nail for about thirty seconds (similar to applying a fake tattoo).

Step 4:

Remove cloth or paper towel and slowly remove the piece of newspaper from the nail. Do this for each of your nails. Remove excess newspaper or paint by using a Q-tip and nail remover.

Papier-Mache Recipe

If you have a stove nearby, papier-mâché paste is easy and fun to make. What you’ll need:

– 1 cup of flour

– 1 cup of sugar

– 4 cups of boiling water

Directions: Mix together all ingredients and bring mixture to a boil. Boil until it is thick and clear (2-3 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. Dip strips in paste and wrap around any object you want to papier-mâché.

If you need a quick recipe, there’s an alternative. What you’ll need:

– 1 cup of flour

– 1 1/2 cups of water

– 1/4 cup of Elmers glue

Directions: Mix ingredients and dip newspaper strips in papier-mâché paste.

Tip: If you live somewhere very humid, add less water (up to 1/4 less).
