Gustavus begins medicine disposal program

Each day, more than 2,500 teens abuse prescription drugs to get high for the first time. In order to combat this rapidly growing problem the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held on Sat., Oct. 29, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Partnership for a Drug Free America conducted the survey that resulted in such large numbers; they also found that over seven million Americans abuse prescription drugs.  Drug Free America reports that most teens who abuse prescription drugs, especially for their first time, get them from friends or family, even straight from the home medicine cabinet.

“People were concerned about the rise of abuse of prescription drugs,” Campus Safety Director Ray Thrower said. It was a similar concern that created the national initiative to fix this problem.

For students or faculty looking to participate in National Prescription Take Back Day, there will be a large white cardboard box located in the Jackson Student Center lobby. All forms of prescription drugs will be accepted, the exception being needles.

For those choosing to participate, the process will be “quick, anonymous, with no questions asked,” according to the Campus Safety Office. All students have to do is walk into the Jackson Student Center, drop off what they wish to dispose of, then walk away. It’s as simple as that.

“Our hope is to reduce the number of teens and others that abuse prescription drugs,” Thrower said.

Even if the prescription drugs have been sitting in a cabinet for years, people are encouraged to clear out their medical cabinets.

“It’s a great opportunity to get rid of old prescription drugs,” Thrower said. Through this program, Americans turned in 376,593 pounds of prescription drugs last year alone.

The St. Peter Police Department is in charge of the disposal box, from there the disposed drugs will be sent to a regional disposal site where they will be destroyed correctly in order to protect the environment from the chemicals they contain.
