The College Democrats sponsored a Get Out and Vote Rally Oct. 29, 2010, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in The Dive, four days before midterm elections. Those present included Tim Walz, the incumbent running for congressman in Minnesota’s District 1 (Walz won the election); Senator Al Franken, who has visited Gustavus multiple times; Margaret Anderson Kelliher, a Gustavus graduate who lost to Mark Dayton in the DFL governor primaries; and the sons of Mark Dayton. At press time, Dayton was the winner of the governor’s race, but a recount is likely. In local elections, Terry Morrow of the DFL party and communications studies professor at Gustavus, won the seat of State Representative of Distrct 23A and DFL Candidate Kathy Sheran won the State Senator of District 23 seat. Nationwide, in the House of Representatives, Democrats won 186 seats and Republicans, 239. In the Senate, Democrats claimed 52 seats and Republicans, 46.
