Asian Student Union Hosts Asian Night Market

This weekend, the Asian Student Union’s (ASU) annual Asian Night Market is back for an evening of food, entertainment, and culture. Students, families, friends, and staff are welcome to join the cultural showcase from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 11th, in Lund Arena.

Asian Night Market is designed to feel like an actual night market. “We want people to walk in and feel like they’ve stepped into something different, somewhere lively, vibrant, and full of culture,” ASU Treasurer and Senior Lupe Olague explained. “It’s about enjoying good food, spending time with friends, and just being present in the moment.”

With the goal of authentically and respectfully representing a wide range of Asian cultures, Asian Night Market displays professional and student cultural expression. Food offerings will include a variety of iconic Asian dishes to try—some homemade by ASU members and others catered from local businesses.

Additionally, “Attendees will be able to enjoy back-to-back performances throughout the evening, including professional performances outside of Gustavus, Gustie performances, and a fashion walk dedicated to promoting Gusties’ cultural backgrounds,” ASU Co-President Salina Le said.

Interactive games like the spicy ramen challenge, a photobooth, and a prize raffle are also annual Gustie favorites. This year’s prizes include an iPad and a speaker.

Leading up to Asian Night Market this weekend, ASU hosted several events to promote the event and showcase different aspects of Asian cultures. Boba Night, Trivia Night, and Karaoke Pop featured more Asian snacks and fun with boba, chai, cookies, Japanese soda, and ramyun.

Asian Night Market is one of the largest cultural events on campus. “ANM serves to be a place where not only Asian descendants can showcase or connect with their cultures, but also a place for everyone to celebrate and appreciate cultural exchanges and diversity,” Le commented.

ASU hopes that people leave the event having learned something new and feeling more connected to the community.

“Seeing people come together, try new things, support performers, and just enjoy themselves is what makes [Asian Night Market] stand out every year,” Olague commented. The community and passion surrounding the event make it special.

All of ASU’s Executive Board plans the event through the food, decorations, and stage committees. The groups collaborate with a focus on detail to ensure that the event not only runs smoothly, but also has a cohesive, high-energy vibe.

“There’s so much passion and effort that goes into putting this event together, and you can feel that when you’re there,” Olague explained.

ASU has at least two aims as a student organization.

“A space where people can come together to learn about Asian heritage and culture, but also just feel welcomed and included,” Olague explained.

It is a place for students to build friendships and celebrate culture in a community of belonging. For many, it feels like a big family.

“Contrary to most misunderstandings, ASU welcomes everyone, including non-Asians. You do not have to identify as of Asian descent to be involved with ASU. We value cultural exchange, appreciation and an open mind to learn new ideas,” Le added.

ASU encourages everyone to feel the community and culture at Asian Night Market from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 11th, in Lund Arena.

“It’s not just an event, it’s a celebration of culture, identity, and connection,” Olague said.
