Q: What are your expectations for the season?
A: I’m very excited for this season. With a new coaching staff and one of–if not the biggest– recruiting classes Gustavus baseball has had I am expecting a very fun and successful year. From freshmen like Matt “Hulk” Berkner to seniors like Joe “The Wonderkid” Melles we have a lot of depth and promising amount of talent. I look forward to seeing how we match up against conference competition and I expect we will do very well.
Q: What is your best athletic memory?
A: My favorite athletic memory at Gustavus came during my junior year playing Augsburg. With nobody out in the third inning it was a neck and neck game. Both teams had fought hard to this point and each had one solid run to show for it. When Augsburg’s first batter of the inning stepped into the box the crowd went nuts. After taking the first pitch for a ball, I thought to myself, ‘this could be the end.’ Then, as a gust of wind took the field, I thought, ‘wait, Gusties Will Shine!’ And that’s when the incredible happened. The batter swung at the second pitch and hit a figuratively smoking ground ball to our shortstop, Danny “Smooth-Moves” Carlson. Despite the brutal 65° weather and distracting noise of the surrounding city, Smooth Moves was not only able to snag the ball with a single hand, but make a throw that one can only imagine coming from a major league baseball player. We got the batter out and I don’t think I’ll ever forget that feeling. Surreal. You can’t make that stuff up.
Q: Why would you recommend Gustavus?
I’d recommend Gustavus to prospective students because its a great school to learn educationally and we also have some fun on the weekends. They took care of me so I have nothing but positive memories when looking back at my time here.
Not a word of that last response was from me. Not that I disagree with what it is saying, just disappointed they made their own entire paragraph and put my name behind it.
