One Ring Phone Scam
Be aware of a form of telephone fraud known as the “one ring scam.” Scammers are using people’s tendency to call back numbers that show as missed calls by calling from an international number (usually using robo-call software to call many numbers at once) and having it ring only once so it can’t be answered. Calling back an unknown number from one of these scammers will result in an international call fee as well as a charge per minute. The scammers use methods to try to keep the person on the line, or to get more personal information from them. In the United States the FTC regulates that pay numbers have a certain area code (like 1-900) but this is not the case for international phone numbers. Area codes 473, 268, 876, 809, and 284 have been associated with this scam.
If you think you have been the victim of this scam, contact your cell phone carrier and watch your cell phone bill for suspicious charges.
If your phone rings, and it is an international number you don’t recognize, don’t call the number back.
