Part 2 of Harry Potter, the last installment of our childhood

Harry Potter, the boy who lived, returns to defeat Lord Voldemort in the second half of the epic movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with his friends Ron and Hermione at his side.

At the conclusion of Part 1 of the film, the film’s heroes were burying their beloved friend, Dobby the house elf, and Voldemort had retrieved the Elder Wand, rumored to be the most powerful wand in the world, from the grave of Albus Dumbledore.

To counter Voldemort’s increasing power, Harry, Ron and Hermione must continue their quest to destroy Voldemort’s Horcruxes, which render him invulnerable until they’re destroyed. To do this, the trio must break into Gringotts, the wizard’s bank, and then sneak back into their beloved school which has been taken over by Voldemort’s minions.

Once they return to Hogwarts and force Voldemort’s minions to flee, they have to defend the castle from an onslaught of Voldemort’s forces and destroy the remaining Horcruxes.  Harry must deal with his friends being killed in the fighting and eventually face his own death.

This was a phenomenal film, with amazing acting and a great plot. The movie grossed $43.5 million dollars on opening night, making it the highest grossing midnight showing in history, overcoming Twilight Saga – Eclipse which had $30 million.

In total, the film grossed almost $400 million dollars in the United States, and over $1.3 billion worldwide. It is the highest grossing film of 2011, the third highest grossing film of all time, and the ninth film to gross over $1 billion.

Under the direction of David Yates, actors Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson played their roles magnificently, as did Ralph Fiennes, conveying terror in his portrayal of Voldemort. There was a good mix of action-filled and sentimental scenes, with plenty of humor along the way. I found myself dreading the end of the movie because I did not want this film, or the story of Harry Potter to end.

While it did deviate significantly from the book at various points (one of which was a change in dialogue in one of my favorite parts of the book, when Harry speaks to the ghosts of his loved ones), a majority of the movie was accurate in its translation from page to screen. Fans have a reason to rejoice for the spectacular finale to the series. I give this movie five out of five stars.
