Cars 2—fun for Family Weekend

Cars 2, directed by John Lasseter, is primarily a story of the friendship between two characters, Lightning McQueen (played by Owen Wilson) and Mater (played by Larry the Cable Guy).

Lightning McQueen is the amicable red race-car. Mater, a rusty tow-truck, greets McQueen upon his arrival with a bout of exuberance.

The resident cars of Radiator Springs also celebrate McQueen’s return. Meanwhile, Mater argues with Italian racecar Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro) about McQueen’s racing potential. Consequently, this causes McQueen to accept Bernoulli’s challenge to race internationally.

Persuaded by his girlfriend, Sally (Bonnie Hunt), McQueen agrees to let Mater tag along.

Overseas, the tow-truck is out of place amid the exotic race-cars. McQueen and Mater’s friendship is tested when McQueen loses a race because of Mater.

Mater catches a break when  suddenly he becomes involved in international espionage and British Secret Service agents Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) and Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer).

The movie succeeds as an animated flick for two reasons:  it’s humorous and isn’t built around the persona of one or more voice actors.

The movie targets a younger audience. Having said that, it’s still pretty darn funny. There’s just something inherently amusing about personified cars.

In the movie it appears that the actors had been selectively cast in order to fit the story’s  characters. And each actor does a fabulous job. There’s strong character interplay within the film because the movie isn’t focalized on any one actor’s persona.

Cars 2 is an overall solid animation flick with humor that young and mature audi-ences can appreciate together. Its quality voice acting gives the film’s characters depth and creates convincing interplay between them. I give Cars 2 four out of five stars.

  1. The Cars characters will never be in danger of melting my heart, but the spy stuff in this film is enough of a rip-roaring interruption to carry me through the two-hour running time.

  2. I’ve seen this movie, starting from the first and second series, it is very funny and interesting, I do not get bored if you want to play it again, because I really liked and funny, for the second film I had bought pirated so want to know how the rest of the story, it turns out a little different, but interesting enough for a tow truck (Mater) who becomes a spy, not to not see this movie, cars2
