So, What is the Weekly?

Variety Editor and Interim Editor in Chief- Colleen Coleman

Established in 1891, The Gustavian Weekly is an independent news source run by students. It provides the campus community with unbiased, relevant, and important information regarding the student, faculty, and staff body of Gustavus Adolphus College, through weekly publications. The Weekly aims to remain an independent news source that maintains journalistic integrity.

The Gustavian Weekly is staffed by students of all different majors and academic disciplines. Our staff are Gusties passionate about writing and journalism, even if they don’t major in it. The writing and communication skills that come from working for a newspaper apply to every major without a letter grade attached to it. Every student will benefit from writing experience, regardless of what their career may be.

Working for The Gustavian Weekly provides you with valuable skills for the workforce: time management, teamwork, and communication. Depending on the section, you may conduct interviews, research a topic, communicate with students, faculty, and staff, attend events and concerts, and more. During my time writing for The Weekly, I met and collaborated with many different areas of Gustavus, meeting people with experiences and knowledge way outside of my field, and getting to know more about what makes Gustavus… Gustavus.

While we are an independent voice of the student body, we report on our experiences as students, not controlled by what the college wants us to report on, and we do represent the student population. We uphold and represent the experiences of the student body from our own perspective. An independent student publication is inherently unique as it is not a ‘sugar-coated’ view of Gustavus.

Even if you aren’t interested in working for The Weekly, why not read it? The Weekly is an honest representation of our school and its community. It’s more than a stack of papers on a newsstand in the Campus Center; it’s a showcase of what makes Gustavus and its students unique. The Weekly is a creative outlet for students to showcase their experiences, and it is a great way to understand your peers.

While we are not hiring for the 25-26 academic year, we hope that every Gustavus student will read and benefit from our representation of the student body. If you are interested in contributing to The Weekly in the future, please reach out when applications are open.
