GUSTIE of the WEEK: Carter Learned

Emma Kelsey – Staff Writer

Carter Learned (‘24), Gustie of the Week, is a passionate and highly motivated Gustavus student Majoring in Theater with Honors with a focus on Lighting Design. In addition to the wide array of work he does in the theater department, he also holds the position of Chair for the Inclusive Excellence Committee in the Student Senate, is a member of LineUs Comedy Improv, a member of Choir of Christ Chapel, and sings in the Social Justice Choir.
“I truly believe in creating equity and an inclusive environment for all, and working to create the most accessible space for all no matter their background is a fight I will continue,” Learned said.

And it’s thanks to Learned’s passion and hardwork that Co-Ed has a gender-neutral housing section, which has helped multiple First-years feel more comfortable starting their college journey at Gustavus.

He shares that his favorite part about Gustavus is the community; whether he knows the faces he passes while walking through campus, or feeling those deep connections with friends and fellow Gusties. “This tight knit world on top of the hill has my entire heart,” Learned said.

Learned works hard to support everyone he comes in contact with from helping the underclassman in his J-Term learn more about the technical side of theater or simply supporting his wide array of friends on campus.

This year has been very eventful and exciting for Learned. With the return to in-person classes (mostly), and his most recent creative project as Assistant Light Designer with the J-Term production of The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Learned works around the clock every day to fit in activities, classes, and social time.
Learned also just returned from a conference on technical theater which is a perfect example of his continuous excitement to further his knowledge and perfect his technical skills. While it can be overwhelming, it keeps him “well-rounded and focused.”
On top of his personal achievements, Learned believes that this has been a good year for Gustavus as a whole, with the community staying responsible around Covid-related issues, and the little glimpses of normality that are beginning to creep back into daily life. Learned is proud of the Gustavus community for sticking through such challenging times together, and showing such resilience. “Each and every member of this community has shown their strength and willingness to learn and grow through hardships, and that speaks volumes to the characters of every single Gustie,” Learned said.
