Honoree of Poetry Celebration
Minnesota’s one and only Poet Laureate will be reading some of her poems right here at Gustavus.
Not only is Joyce Sutphen Minnesota’s second Poet Laureate ever, but she is a Gustavus alumna and currently teaches courses in the English department on literature and poetry.
In celebration of Sutphen’s poetry and special position as Poet Laureate, selections of poetry will be read in Alumni hall on April 17, 2012 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
At the celebration, the poets, Phil Bryant, John Rezmerski, Becky Fremo, Matt Rasmussen, Rick Rollins, Candace Black, Dick Terrill and Sutphen, will read a chosen piece.
“There are some top secret surprises coming Joyce’s way that evening, so we hope for a nice, big crowd,” Rebecca Fremo, English Department Chair, said.
This event is an opportunity for Gustavus to say thank you for
everything Sutphen has done for Gustavus and poetry.
Govenor Mark Dayton himself presented Sutphen with this honor. Sutphen has written several publications and continues to write books of poetry in her free time.
