I’m mad ‘cause it’s March

By mad I really mean, I am so freaking excited it’s March! Think about all the awesome things that are commencing this month. Obviously our picks will be different, but we can all agree that March is super cool. First of all, have you ever noticed that March is the only month that also works as a verb? Just saying it aloud makes me feel motivated to get up and do something!   So grab your watches, a four leaf clover and your brackets, and let’s see what we have this month!

Starting off at the number six seed is Daylight Savings. Now Daylight Savings starts off strong in the fall, giving us all an extra hour of sleep. Being college students, an extra hour of time is never a bad thing. Unfortunately, Daylight Savings always has a tough spring counterpart that takes an hour away from us. While losing that hour of sleep never feels good, we get more daylight! Now the sun gets to blast the vitamin D we all deserve for more hours in the day. However, I predict that because we all really want that hour back, Daylight Savings will stay the sixth seed and never advance.

The number five seed goes to the weather, which has brought up some controversy this year. Avid winter sport lovers are praising this extended period of snow. Being a skier myself, I don’t mind seeing the snow hang around. Maybe I can still hit the trails in April? Unfortunately, the melting snow leaves the ground looking worse for wear. The good news is that snow melting means summer is coming. Either way, both winter and summer parties are happy. And this number five seed could surprise all of us. I mean, we do live in Minnesota after all … anything could happen.

Taking the number four spot is St. Patrick’s Day—or the day where we all get to be Irish even if we are actually Lebanese. Just like every other holiday, we use it as an excuse to celebrate something most of us don’t even know the real meaning behind—hurray! In this case, it’s consuming mass quantities of green drinks, candies and dishes. I hope you wore green too, or you were probably pinched by the person who actually cares, as hard as they could.

The always high-ranked President’s Ball takes the number three spot. Seriously, it is way better than your prom. On paper, prom and “P-Ball” look  pretty similar, but this is college, so obviously it’s going to have elements high school can’t touch. The omnipresent Rockin’ Hollywoods? Those guys are great; you can’t say anything bad about them. Plus, who doesn’t like dressing up fancy and going out with friends? Even with the price tag, President’s Ball is totally worth it.

Some debate was going around, but Spring Break was granted the number two spot. What’s the debate? Well you might be curious what could top Spring Break?  Just wait, it’s coming. Spring Break has been glorified as the best ten days of our undergraduate lives. Personally, I have never gone anywhere warm, foreign or unforgettable. Something is seriously wrong with me, and I am positive I am in the minority in this case. Spring Break marks the mid-way point of the second semester and allows us to see the light at the end of the tunnel. March 26 is a date that sounds like music in my ears!

Last, but not least, our number one seed. Let’s be honest, unless America decides we all get the entire month of March off, the top seed will never be dethroned. Do you feel the urge to read statistics? Are you suddenly willing to drop $5 into a big pot? Well, my friend, you have March Madness. The odds that you pick all 63 games correctly is one in a trillion, or some other insane number. Schools we have never heard of suddenly make us lose our sanity! I will be honest, I’m not much of a basketball fan, but, come March, everything changes.

I have watched approximately half of a Division I basketball game this year and can’t pronounce Syracuse to save my life, but guess what? I just finished filling out four brackets on four different websites. Do I have the Madness? You betcha. I am going to cheer so hard for Boston U when they play Kansas, you’d think I went there. March Madness brings the thrill of the underdogs toppling the high seeds.

Remember UNI last year? I am willing to bet half of us didn’t even know what UNI stood for before they upset Kansas last year. Those kinds of stories make March so exciting. Of course, adding money makes it more interesting too; the chance of winning the pot is enticing. By the time this goes to press, it will be too late to make picks, so I hope you all got that done! Let the Madness begin!
